Primary - Adding to quality of life - social value: 2003 Green Light Trust, Suffolk

This environmental charity's People Planting scheme is focussed on creating a nationwide patchwork of community-owned woodlands to enrich landscapes and neighbourhoods. To do this the Trust's team of expert environmentalists, teachers and performers approach and involve both communities and their schools.Over and above hands-on support, the charity provides each group with a Toolkit of information. This comprehensive document covers every aspect of a project for establishing and running a community woodland.

Founded: The Trust was formed in 1988 and the People Planting scheme was launched in 2000.

Area: Small patches of woodland throughout England, varying in size from 2 to 24 acres.

Locations: Aside from 14 sites in the East of England, there are also projects in Sheffield, Scarborough, Margate and Ealing.

Achievements to date:
The Trust already has 18 ‘People Planting‘ projects underway across England, with others at the planning stage.

Partners: communities - numerous schools, youth clubs, councils and local environment agencies.

Sponsors: include B&Q and a number of charitable trusts - Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, Tudor Trust and Carnegie UK Trust.
